Native only to the Piedmont and Coastal Plain of North Carolina and Virginia, big-headed aster grows in dry woodlands, forest edges, roadsides, and powerline rights-of-way. It prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained, moderately moist soils, though it tolerates the sandy or slightly clay-leaning conditions common in its native range. Happy Earth Day.
